Google introduced the ability to create memories to the Photos app around 5 years ago. Since then, the company has added numerous AI capabilities to the app that allow it to group and show you photos according to a certain date, occasion or festival. As such, in the recent Google I/O event, Google has further added the ability to lock your memories as well as make cinematic representations of your moments. Here is a list of all the different types of Google Memories that you can currently create in Google Photos.
Google Photos Memories List
- Previous Years: Photos taken in the current week in your previous years.
- Recent Highlights: Photos and videos captured in the past few weeks.
- Themed Memories: Photos and videos captured in the past, grouped based on people, places, and objects.
- Memories based on shape and color: Photos and videos grouped based on a shape and color like a particular backpack, water bottle, hat, sports jersey, or more.
- Best of the Month Memories: Your best photos and videos based on Google AI captured in the ongoing months.
- Trip Highlights: Photos and videos captured on a particular trip grouped based on location and AI data.
- Holiday Memories: Photos and Videos captured in the past grouped based on a festival.
- Cinematic Photos: Photos and Videos post-processed through Google’s AI to produce depth-based realistic photos that appear to move. This effect is generated by duplicating existing images and using advanced machine learning to animate 2D images.
- Collage Designs: Memories and moments grouped into a collage relevant to the theme of your photos and videos.
- Memories based on activities and location: Photos and videos grouped based on things like hiking, trips, and more.
What else has Google added to Photos?
Google has also added the ability to control what you see in your memories as announced in the recent Google I/O event. You will now be able to perform the following functions as the features slowly roll out in the coming weeks.
- Hide photos from certain time-periods.
- Rename a Trip Highlight
- Remove a Trip Highlight
- Remove a single photo from a memory
- Remove Best of Month memories
- Rename memories based on moments
- Remove memories based on moments
In addition to this, Google has also added a password-protected folder to Google Photos called the ‘Locked Folder’. You can save all your private moments in this location to keep them from prying eyes including other apps that access your photos gallery through Google Photos. The locked folder items will also be invisible from your photos grid and will not show up in any memories.
This feature will first be released to Pixel devices in the coming weeks and should be available on other Android devices in the following months.
